Ladyvale Bridge - Fish-pass works starting soon

Ladyvale Bridge in Cardinham Woods is beautiful - but the newer bridge beside it has been causing a block to migrating fish in all-but perfect water conditions.

West Country Rivers Trust & The Fowey Rivers Association have been working with The Environment Agency & The Forestry Commission to plan a fish-pass around the 'pipe-culverts'

The work has been approved and funding sourced - which is great news.

Better still - work will start very soon, probably in the coming week.

Here are the 'before' pictures - Hopefully the after pictures won't be too long coming -

EA Restormel Fish Counter - 2015 to date

The Environment Agency have just published some interesting statistics from the Restormel Fish Counter in Lostwithiel.

Sea Trout & Salmon runs are close to the 10-year average so far this year - and a little slower then last year.

Signal Crayfish found in The Fowey

The Environment Agency have confirmed that they have discovered Signal Crayfish in the upper reaches of The River Fowey in The Draynes Valley.

While the EA undertake trapping of the larger adults and further survey work to find the extent of the infestation they are advising anglers and anyone entering the river to follow their guidlines to stop the further spread.

Please download and follow the guidelines in the attached EA pamphlet entitled 'Clean & Dry' outlining techniques of drying off tackle and clothing between exit and entry of different watercourses.

Trout & Salmon - Save Our Salmon

In May 2015 Trout & Salmon magazine launched Save Our Salmon – a campaign that seeks to highlight the plight of the wild Atlantic salmon and raise funds to return the species to abundance.

Organisations were asked to pitch ideas that they believe will help to reach that goal.

Trout & Salmon have chosed the best eight of which they have published in the magazine and also at this website - www.saveoursalmon.org/

Please read each pitch and decide which you think is most deserving. You can then vote by completeing the form on the 'vote now' page.

It is noted that Pitch 6 from South West Rivers Association (& our own Roger Furniss) is specifically focused on our rivers in the South West.

St Neot Salmon Hatchery

Following a study into the suitability of either Colliford or Park Pit for a new Hatchery to restock the St Neot with Salmon - South West Water have announced that Colliford is the preferred site for a Hatchery.

South West Water will design and commission the new Hatchery - due to produce 40,000 Salmon Fry for The St Neot River - and FRA Ltd will be contracted to run the Hatchery.

It is planned that the Hatchery will start a rearing programme in October 2016 with the first fish stocking due the following autumn, September/October 2017.

This announcement comes after much work and negotiations between South West Water, The Fowey Rivers Association, West Country Rivers Trust and The Environment Agency - all under the jurisdiction of The Fowey Fisheries Resources Group.
